Alone Against Tomorrow: Stories of Alienation in Science Fiction

(alternate titles: All the Sounds of Fear; The Time of the Eye)
1971

Ellison's first greatest-hits collection, a 10-year retrospective with particular emphasis (as the subtitle makes clear) on tales of alienation.

Some picks are obviously worthy ("'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman," "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream"), others less so ("Life Hutch"). And the absence, for whatever reason, of "A Boy and His Dog," "The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World" and several other examples of Ellison's best makes this a something-less-than complete retrospective of his work to this point.

In Great Britain, the book was released in paperback in two volumes, All the Sounds of Fear and The Time of the Eye.
